So what is the Sony Rolly? It’s actually quite difficult to define. Is it an MP3 player? Is it a toy? Is it a bluetooth speaker system? The answer to all of these questions is yes.

Looking a little like a rugby ball with wheels I expected the Rolly to be about that size, however, it actually fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The Rolly has 1 or 2GB of internal memory (depending on the model) which can hold your MP3 music. To transfer the music to the Rolly though you’ll have to use the supplied PC software called Rolly Choreographer. There’s no MAC version of this. The Automatic Choreography feature uses 12 tone analysis and beat analysis technology to analyse music on your Rolly, and then automatically creates motion that matches the music. You can manually work on the choreography if you want using the software too.
With innovative size and shape being designed for music players, Sony Rolly is one refreshing design. Design wise it is of the shape of a cylinder, which comes with 1 GB internal flash memory. It also has Bluetooth connectivity for receiving and streaming music. It also has a USB connection for transferring music and charging the batteries. The audio format supported being MP3, ATRAC and AAC up to 330 kbps.

The battery used is the rechargeable 3.7V, which has a battery life of 5 hours for music playback, while the same gives 4.5 hours on Bluetooth connection. It has dimensions 104 x 65 x 65 and weighs about 300 grams. With a price tag of $360, it sure leaves one hole in the pocket.

I won’t deny that the Sony Rolly is pretty amusing–I couldn’t stop giggling the first time I saw it in action in front of me. It’s cute. It’s fun. It’s unique. It’s also a glorified MP3 player that’ll set you back a startling $399. Clearly, this device is not for everyone. So who is it for? Well, my cat seemed a little bit interested at first, but she ultimately decided the Rolly packaging and the video camera were much more exciting. I love my cat and all, but a $400 toy is just a bit excessive. Really, the Rolly is for the gadget head that has everything and some cash to burn. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to have an interest in robot choreography.
